Science tutors in Cape Town

From a difficult physics calculation to a biology topic that needs a clearer explanation, a subject specialist can help. We offer one-on-one science tutoring in Cape Town, at home or online, with a tutor chosen for your child’s subject and syllabus.

Science that your child can make sense of

In science, remembering a definition is only part of the work. Your child also needs to apply it, interpret a graph or explain what an experiment shows. We begin with an assessment of their understanding and recent schoolwork, so lessons address the things they find difficult.

Every one of our science tutors scored a distinction or higher in the subject at school, has studied a relevant field at university, passed our intake exam with distinction, and completed our tutor training programme with distinction. We choose a tutor from our own team who suits your child’s subject, syllabus and personality.

An Education Leader, a senior member of our Cape Town team who plans and oversees your child’s programme, works alongside the tutor. They supervise the teaching, stay in contact with the school and report back to your family. The programme can address understanding, study habits and exam technique together.

Genius has been operating since 1993 and has delivered more than 250,000 hours of one-on-one tuition. Our Cape Town branch in Claremont supports families from local and international schools, including Herschel, Reddam House, Hout Bay International and Somerset College.

The science subjects we tutor

Tell us the subject, grade and syllabus. We will help you find the right support for the work ahead.

Physical Sciences, Grade 10 to 12

Physics and chemistry, from understanding a concept to applying it in a calculation. Lessons give attention to units, formulae, graphs and explaining each step of the method.

Life Sciences, Grade 10 to 12

Cells, genetics, human physiology and evolution. We help students organise the content, interpret questions and practise clear written answers and labelled diagrams.

Natural Sciences, Grade 7 to 9

Building the foundations for high school science. A tutor can help your child connect the ideas, understand investigations and become more comfortable asking questions.

Maths and science together

If algebra or rearranging an equation is holding up the physics, we can address the maths too. One Education Leader can oversee a programme covering both subjects.

Science lessons at home in Cape Town

If you are looking for a physics or life sciences tutor near you, share your suburb and your child’s syllabus with our Cape Town team. We will discuss home tuition and a suitable tutor, taking your family’s routine into account.

We also support families in Somerset West and Stellenbosch and the Winelands. The lesson arrangements are agreed with your family before the programme begins.

One-on-one lessons give your child room to work through a problem without rushing to keep up with a class. The tutor can see how they are thinking, explain an idea another way and let them try the next question themselves.

Our approach

  1. Assess

First, we assess the student to identify gaps in the fundamentals (what content don’t they know?) and common error types (how are they losing marks?).

  2. Match

Then, we select a mentor from our team of Science tutors. It is crucial for a student to ‘like’ their tutor and look forward to the lessons.

  3. Teach

The trained tutor comes to the house for high-impact one-on-one lessons where they actually teach the ideas and concepts.

  4. Practise

We set structured homework for the student to do in between lessons. When it comes to learning, practice is key.

  5. Engage

We use projects, experiments, and practical demonstrations to excite the student and pique their interest.

  6. Test

The student writes regular mock tests so that they can practise their skills under exam conditions, and we can monitor their progress and increase their confidence.

  7. Refine technique

A student needs to familiarise themselves with the technical requirements of the memorandum in order to excel. We teach test-taking techniques.

  8. Supervise

We supervise, guide and support the programme to ensure a great result.

Online science tutoring

Our online science lessons are live and one-on-one, with the same tutor matching and Education Leader oversight as in-person tuition. A shared screen lets the tutor and student work through calculations, diagrams and past-paper questions together.

Practical work remains part of the school’s programme. Tuition can help your child understand the ideas behind an investigation, interpret the results and practise explaining what the evidence shows. We plan that support around the syllabus they are following.

Questions Cape Town parents ask about science

Is Physical Sciences one subject or two?
Physical Sciences brings physics and chemistry together in one school subject. In the CAPS matric exams, they are assessed in separate papers: physics in Paper 1 and chemistry in Paper 2. A student may need more help with one part, so we look at both before planning the lessons.
Do you have a physics tutor near me?
We offer science tuition at home in Cape Town. Tell us your area, your child’s grade and the subject they need help with, and our team will check a suitable tutor and arrangement. Live online lessons are also available.
Should my child take Physical Sciences in Grade 10?
We can help your family think through the choice by looking at their current understanding, interests and future plans. Check the specific entry requirements of any university courses they are considering, including Mathematics requirements. An assessment can help identify where they may need support before taking the subject further.
Do you tutor Life Sciences and Biology?
Yes. We support Life Sciences for CAPS and IEB students, and Biology for Cambridge and IB students. We match for the syllabus your child is following and plan lessons around the content and assessments they will meet.
Can you help before prelims and finals?
Yes. We look at recent tests and schoolwork to identify the priorities, then plan preparation around the papers ahead. That may include difficult topics, calculations, diagrams, written explanations and timing. Starting earlier gives us more time to address gaps in understanding.
What does it cost, and what happens first?
Our current fees are on our fee structure page. We start with an assessment, then your Education Leader recommends a programme and tutor. You can read how we operate or enquire now to discuss your child’s needs with our Cape Town team.
